 Johan Niemand

Johan Niemand

LLB/Partner


Johan started his legal career in 2005 in Tauranga before returning to Hamilton to work at a local law firm.  In early 2009, Johan left that firm to commence practice as a Barrister sole before joining forces with Kay Hoult in partnership with a vision to create a law firm that thrives on excellence and provides a friendly work environment.

Johan's practice covers a wide variety of work, but primarily involves all aspects of family law and other forms of litigation.  He regularly appears in the Family Court, District Court and High Court.  Johan has also conducted cases in the Maori Land Court, Employment Relations Authority and Court of Appeal.  He also receives appointments from the Family Court to represent children in family disputes and has been appointed in both the Family Court and the High Court as counsel to assist the court and as counsel for subject person in various proceedings.  

Johan is heavily involved in theatre and serves on a number of Theatre Society committees and boards.  He is fluent in Afrikaans and maintains close links with the South African community both on a professional and personal level.  In addition, Johan enjoys spending time with his partner, family and friends - usually over a nice meal and glass of wine.

 Kay Hoult

Kay studied for her Law Degree at Waikato University, graduating with First Class Honours.  Prior to commencing practice with Johan Niemand in 2009, Kay was a partner at a law firm in Hamilton.  Over the years Kay has specialised in general litigation with a particular focus on relationship property and trust matters.  Kay is a qualified mediator and frequently leads Family Dispute Resolution Mediations.  She also has experience in the Coroner's Court.  The Family Court appoints Kay to act for children in family disputes.  In 2011, Kay received the Family Law Award at the annual New Zealand Law Awards.  In 2012, Kay received the New Zealand Litigation and Dispute Resolution Award.  Kay is a Council member of Age Concern Hamilton.

When Kay is not at work, she cherishes time with her family and walking the dog.  In the winter she can often be found on the mountain, skiing.

Kay is a judicial officer and sits as a Disputes Tribunal Referee.

 Fiona Amarasekera

Fiona Amarasekera

LLB/Partner


Fiona was admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor of New Zealand in July 2008. She was also admitted as a Barrister & Solicitor in the Supreme Court of Western Australia where she practised family law.  

Fiona specialises in Family Law including parenting orders, protection orders, guardianship issues such as relocation and relationship property.  Fiona is appointed by the Family Court to act for children in family disputes. Fiona heads the Free Legal Advice Service at the Western Community Centre and has a passion for providing legal assistance in the community when she can.

Outside of work her interests are socialising with friends, family and travel.

 Sharandeep Singh

Sharandeep Singh

Sharandeep began working for Niemand Peebles Hoult in October 2019. She completed her LLB at the University of Waikato and was admitted to the bar in October 2017. She initially began her family law career in South Auckland and brought her knowledge and skills back to her hometown, Hamilton. Sharandeep has worked with diverse cultures and can assist you through the legal process for child care, family violence and relationship property matters.

Whilst not at work, Sharandeep enjoys travelling and spending time with her family and friends. Sharandeep is currently on maternity leave.

 Ben Burton-McKenzie

Ben Burton-McKenzie

LLB (Hons)/Solicitor


Ben joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in January 2019 and completed his Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours at University of Waikato later that same year.

Ben was admitted as a Solicitor in August 2020 and has since focused on Relationship Property and Care of Children matters.

During his time at University of Waikato, Ben represented the University in both national and international Mooting competitions.  He also placed first in the Norris Ward McKinnon First Year Moot, the Bell Gully Junior Moot, and the Bell Gully Senior Moot.

Outside of work, Ben enjoys a variety of sports and loves spending time with his friends and family.

Saro joined the Niemand Peebles Hoult team in 2021 after graduating from University of Waikato with a Bachelor of Laws with First Class Honours in 2019. She is passionate about Family Law and her experience primarily relates to Parenting Orders, Guardianship issues and Protection Orders. Saro aims to provide her clients with support to navigate the Family Court system and assist them in reaching safe, sensible, and fair solutions. She hopes to become a Lawyer for Child later in her career.

Rae Brown

Practice Manager


Rae is the Practice Manager and Trust Account Administrator.  She has many years of experience in customer service and Human Resource management.  Rae is a vital part of our management team and her skills are ideally suited to her Trust Account administration responsibilities.

Rae says that the people at NPH are a dedicated, professional team who work hard, but they also have lots of fun.  Outside of work, Rae's interests are photography, fashion, sewing and spending time with her family.

Ange joined the team at Niemand Peebles Hoult in 2018.  Ange is our receptionist and is the friendly face you see when you come into our office.  

Ange's interests outside of work include family, playing tennis and going to the gym.  She also enjoys movies and travel.

Scott joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in February 2020. Previously Scott was a Senior Manager of Victoria Street Bistro and had decided expand his horizons into administration.

Nina joined the team at Niemand Peebles Hoult in February 2020. She is originally from Los Angeles, California, and decided to move to New Zealand in 2019.  She graduated from California Institute of Technology in 2013, completing her Bachelor of Science in Biology. 

Outside of work Nina enjoys spending time with friends playing both computer and board games, as well as spoiling her corgi Axel.

Isobel joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in 2020.  With over 25 years administrative experience working in various roles within Government, Corporate and Not-for-profit organisations.  Isobel’s interests outside of work include spending time with friends and family which includes 4 grandchildren, getting out in nature, food forest gardening and learning ways to live more sustainably by reducing waste and has started making her own cleaning products.

Kate recently graduated with a BA in Spanish and New Zealand Sign Language at Victoria University and moved to the Waikato for a change of pace. She started with Niemand Peebles Hoult in February 2021.  Outside of work, Kate is a freelance editor and lover of reading. When she is able, she wants to travel to Europe and make a long stop in Spain so she can hopefully achieve fluency.

Tazmyn is a fourth year Law student who joined Niemand Peebles Hoult in 2021 as a part time receptionist. In 2018, she decided to flee the small coastal town of Whangamata and study towards a Bachelor of Laws at University of Waikato. Tazmyn is expected to graduate in 2022 where she aspires to complete her Profs and pursue a career as a Lawyer. Tazmyn says that the team at Niemand Peebles Hoult are passionate, diligent and extremely hard working.
